              December 2014

2014 will always be remembered for our 10th anniversary milestone and Power of 10 campaign.

The year has passed in a flash with our annual Appreciation event concluding our 10th birthday celebrations on a high note. We were overwhelmed by how many of you, pioneering supporters as well as brand new ones, joined us to connect and reminisce about the last 10 years and see how far TSiBA has come from dream to thriving institution. (Have a look at the photos here)

While the stress of writing exams is over for most students, TSiBA staff are working flat out moderating exam papers, managing supplementary exams and processing final results. At the same time we are  gearing up for 2015 with goals including heightened academic focus, cementing our principles of a scaffolded student support approach and taking our unique subject majors of Leadership and Self-Development and Entrepreneurship to the next level. Renewed and dedicated attention will be given to mentorship, our Pay it Forward work and Career Management.

In parallel, 2015 will see a continuation of our Enterprise and Supplier Development work, TSiBA Education Solutions and our work to secure TSiBA’s financial sustainability – locally and internationally.

We are humbled that TSiBA has been recognised with so many awards this year. We are honoured to share some more good news and proud endorsements with your in this newsletter. Nurturing leaders and entrepreneurs of this calibre is a collective effort and without the whole-hearted support of our staff, volunteers, donors and friends like you - it simply would not be possible.

Our sincere appreciation goes out to everyone who has contributed to our work this year, including students; donors and partners; volunteer lecturers, tutors and mentors; and a special appreciation for the dedication shown by the phenomenal staff who make up “Team TSiBA”.

TSiBA staff are dedicated and work incredibly hard, but we also make time for some fun and invite you take a glimpse into some of these happy moments by clicking here to watch our Pharrell Williams #HappyTSiBA video.

Best wishes for the holiday season.

Yours in continuing to drive for change in 2015,
Adri Marais

Driving Change

While load-shedding has kept parts of South Africa in the dark over the last few weeks TSiBA continues Igniting Opportunity! Two final year BBA students, Joseph Maisels and Zikhona Ngumbela, have been awarded Mandela Rhodes Scholarships for postgraduate study in 2015. You are both truly an inspiration -  not only to us, but your friends, family, peers, community and our nation.
Congratulations and THANK YOU to all our committed supporters involved in TSiBA who play a part in everything our students achieve.

Thank you to all our

TSiBA thrives on a community of people who volunteer time, expertise, financial and non-financial resources. As an institution we are fortunate to have the community Paying it Forward with us which enables us to Ignite Opportunity.
You may be just what we are looking for… TSiBA is currently sourcing members of the community with business experience who are interested in volunteering their time by either lecturing, mentoring, tutoring or invigilating during exam time. Please contact Val Tapela at
val@tsiba.org.za if you would like to get involved.

Have you chatted to a TSiBA student recently?

Our student run Call Centre will be operating over the December/ January holidays. We initiated this project for the first time last year and it proved to be a wonderful opportunity to reach out and connect with all of you and the broader community. The friends in our database really enjoyed hearing from our inspiring students in person and, in turn, the students loved learning more about all the amazing people who support TSiBA in so many different ways.

So if you get a call from a TSiBA student we encourage you to take the time to chat if you can. You’ll be glad you did!

2015 Kofi Annan Scholar

We are thrilled to announce that Siya Gobingca (2010 BBA Graduate & Mandela Rhodes Scholar) has been awarded a full Kofi Annan Scholarship to study towards his MBA in at ESMT in Berlin in 2015. This news was received just as one of our current graduates and Kofi Annan Scholar, Khanyisa Mtombeni (2009 BBA graduate), handed in his final MBA thesis in Berlin, having completed the programme this year. Another Kofi Annan Scholar, Andile Dyonase (BBA Graduate 2013), is also completing his Masters in Finance in Geneva this year.

Siya's advice to students is "I always give myself a chance at success by putting in the work and finding joy in the journey."

Go well Siya we are so proud!

TSiBA BBA student

“I can’t believe what TSiBA has achieved in 10 years
You don't want to miss our short 10 year celebration clip narrated by one of our students - click here to watch!

Warning!! this may inspire you to become a mentor for a TSiBA student :)

Vuyokazi shares that “In my first year at TSiBA I really began to understand TSiBA’s philosophy of Paying it Forward. A person really does need a mentor in their life - I am a mentor myself ...

...The feeling I get when climbing a mountain is one of hope because when I get to the top I can see how beautiful the bigger picture is. Hope is the same feeling that TSiBA gives to me. It is actually true. One day at a time. When TSiBA gave me free education they ignited my passion to Pay it Forward. This is the Power of 10. Just the beginning of the knock-on effect ...”
