TSiBA Magic For Mandela Day!

16 Jul 2018

18 July is Mandela Day, and people all over SA are encouraged to do 67 minutes of activity that makes a social impact.

Coincidentally, next Wednesday is also a Hero Speaker slot here at TSiBA, and we have put the two important events together, and invited Jo Maxwell, the founder of the sleeping bags for the homeless project to share her story and to show us how to make a sleeping bag!

14 years ago, Jo saw the plight of homeless people sleeping in our Cape Winter without shelter and without warmth.  She came up with a solution and found a way to create durable lightweight sleeping bags using just recycled plastic and newspapers.  These bags not only make an enormous difference for the people who use them, they are also easy and quick to make.  Our TSiBA magic at work on Mandela day will be to have staff and students follow the demo and make a sleeping bag and make a difference in someone’s life.

You can see what the bag looks like at the link here:  , or look at the project’s Facebook page:

The detail:

The initiative will be run by the SRC, with support from other clubs and societies.  Tables will be set up in the Arena and available for you to work at until 5pm on the day. You are welcome to invite colleagues, friends and family to join in.  Each bag takes less than 1/2 an hour to make, and we will set up tables for two or four people to work together. Marketing will supply “TSiBA tags” so you can slip a personal message into each bag that you/your team complete.

Jo will supply all the materials except newspapers.  Each bag needs approximately 200 sheets of paper.  i.e.  about 10-15 newspapers per sleeping bag.  You can use Sunday Times size (large) or community newspaper size, as long as they are used consistently.
If you have piles of clean uncrumpled newspapers at home, please bring them to campus.  Even better, if you have a contact at a newspaper manufacturer or distributor please tap them for any spare copies.  Newspapers can be handed in at Reception.  On Tuesday the students will sort them out into the bundles needed for making sleeping bags.

Our aim for the day is to make at least 67 sleeping bags, which we plan to distribute via the LSD-1 Community Collaboration project (Noma), and via the visiting NU students (John).

Help us make our goal a reality!  Are you in?
