In the last two years, water has become a topical issue for small talks and focused conversations alike. #CapeDrought will unfold the many stories told on social media on the Mother City, the first metropolis to potentially run out of this valuable resource. Day Zero doom and gloom notwithstanding, there is a strong awareness that South Africa, and in the specific the Western Cape, is not a lone fighter in the water scarcity battle; on the contrary, climate change around the world is triggering increased scarcity of natural resources.
While water scarcity has been dubbed the new normal, citizens are on a cusp of a new era themselves, where purchasing behaviours and domestic habits need to be updated to reflect a new system. Since the announcement made by DA Leader Musi Maimane that Day Zero had been beaten for 2018, Cape Town’s water consumption has shot up by 54 million litres per day, showing how unprepared we are for the “New Normal”.
What can you do?
In order to address this challenge, Cape Innovation and Technology Initiative (CiTi) and City of Cape Town have organised a weekend-long Design Sprint at the Woodstock Bandwidth Barn, on the 14th and 15th April 2018. Participants will be given the challenge to design a digital campaign, tool, game or app which will help make water-saving the new normal, facilitated by Professionals in the technology and design-thinking space.
Why join the weekend?
Surround yourself with like-minded people in an energised, problem-solved space, where inter-disciplinary teams have the power to design and implement solutions to Cape Town’s biggest challenge. You can also gain experience and skills in design thinking methodology through guided group sessions and present your ideas to City of Cape Town. Whether you have tech and data skills, design skills, a background in behavioural science or just a passion for problem-solving, CiTi wants YOU!
What to bring?
You don’t need to have an idea to join! The design thinking process will be facilitated to allow ideas to come to light. On the other hand, if you’ve got an idea, the workshop offers an opportunity to have it heard by decision-makers in the field. Register a team or join one on the day so you can share your skills and learn new ones too working on one of the city’s biggest priorities.
Participation is free and includes food, drink and coaching throughout the weekend.
Please note: Briefing for participants will take place on Tuesday 10th April from 6pm – 8.30pm at the Woodstock Bandwidth Barn.
